Bob Petrilli is stepping down as president of Amwins’ underwriting division at the end of the year as part of a planned succession process, with the unit’s current COO Ryan Armijo taking over the role, Program Manager can reveal.

Former Swiss Re Corporate Solutions North America CEO Petrilli joined Amwins in 2018 as the first president of the wholesale giant’s underwriting division, which under his oversight has more than doubled in size from around $1.2bn to $3.1bn of premium.

The executive is expected to stay on in an advisory role, working alongside Armijo and the company’s leadership in areas like strategy and M&A as Amwins continues to grow its underwriting division both organically and through potential inorganic opportunities.

In his current role, Armijo has overseen the build-out of the division’s technology platforms to support its programs, as well as creating new underwriting capacities and partners, and driving operational efficiencies across the division, according to Amwins’ website.

Armijo has been COO of the underwriting division for three years, having previously served as senior vice president for underwriting. He originally joined the firm in its small business platform Amwins Access.

Confirming the transition, group CEO Scott Purviance told Program Manager: “Bob joined Amwins in 2018 and became the first president of the underwriting division in our history. The division is comprised of many successful entrepreneurs and underwriting businesses, but Bob’s leadership was key to the division expanding significantly over the past five years.”

He added that the transition will be seamless, as the two executives have worked side by side over the past five and a half years.

“Together, they have helped grow the division to over $3.1bn of underwritten premium in more than 115 programs. Amwins Underwriting is truly one of the most respected MGA platforms in the industry,” said Purviance.
