The fast-growing area of fronting carriers and the resulting impact on PA contractual exposure to risk will also be touched upon.

Assessing Financial Strength of Fronting Companies & Reinsurers
David Paul, ALIRT Research
Pete Chandler, BMS Re US

Over the past several years, as P&C insurance rates began to rise and legacy insurers became more selective about their program activity, the fronting model has gained in popularity. ALIRT notes that eight new U.S. insurers have entered the fronting market over the past five years, with a number established over just the past year and a half.

Given the potential attractiveness of the fronting model to program administrators seeking to establish more “sticky” insurance partners as well as to access alternative pools of capital that can lie behind the fronting carriers (reinsurance and alternative), ALIRT is offering to present on this topic.

The presentation will address the following topics:

  • Types of fronting carriers (i.e., full-time fronts, partial fronts)
  • List of active fronting insurers and ownership
  • Ratings profile
  • Line of business (LOB) concentration
  • Percentages of business retention, if noted (i.e. “skin in the game”)
  • Credit oversight of reinsurance partners
  • Use of collateral (for offshore and/or unrated reinsurance partners)
  • Other financial oversight issues particular to the program market
  • Current ALIRT profiles of the major program insurers.
